Ewen Balfour was the éminence grise of invisible networking. He operated as a benign Cardinal Richelieu in the world of the arts, in a career that spanned journalism, government service and public relations. He was quietly but enormously effective behind the scenes, in charge of public affairs at the British Museum, the Royal Opera House and the Royal Philharmonic, before becoming a consultant at the Brunswick Group. It has been said that half of the people within the remit of the Arts Council owe him their jobs.

cheesethegreat writes "The Royal Society of Chemistry has sharply criticized the 'catastrophically' falling standards for UK school exams in the sciences. The RSC had 1,300 highly achieving students take an exam made up of questions taken from the last 50 years. The students averaged an appalling 15% on 'hard' numerical questions set in the 1960s, but managing much higher marks on the more recent 'soft' non-numerical questions. This latest report has garnered mainstream media attention. The RSC has also created a petition on the UK Prime Minister's official website, calling for urgent intervention to halt the slide, which has garnered over 3,000 signatures. The issue of declining exam standards has been an ongoing concern in the UK, with allegations that exam results have been manipulated by the government to increase pass rates and meet

Why did you decide to establish AMEMUSO? AMEMUSO means Abuja Metropolitan Music Society. It is the first music society in the Federal Capital of Nigeria. As you have the music society in Lagos- the Muson, Abuja also deserves to have their own. The society is purely a Nigerian society where the only ‘oyibo’ at the moment is myself. And where the Board of Trustees and the Directors are all Nigerians. We are trying to help the city to find different ways to target and develop the talents and potentials of the city.

A tough year has turned even tougher for Electronic Arts, the video game maker, which told Wall Street on Tuesday that its fiscal year-end sales and profit would be significantly lower than it projected just six weeks ago. The company said it had lowered its projections because of changes in the behavior of consumers and retailers. Electronic Arts said consumers appeared to be buying a few hit games, rather than spreading out their spending. That has hurt Electronic Arts, which had only one game — the space epic Dead Space — among the 10 best sellers in October, according to NPD, a market research firm. At the same time, some retailers are cutting back on video game inventory and also.................Read More @ The New York Times

Students aged between five and 18 who are talented in the arts can enrol part-time at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts' (Nafa) School of Young Talents. Enrolment has increased steadily from 1,000 in 1999 to 3,700 now. But despite the increase, Madam Fang Yuan, the school's founding principal, has lamented that the students are not taking up careers in the arts. According to her, parental concerns and school workloads stop students from pursuing their artistic studies and training. There are students at 14 or 15 who have been offered places at prestigious music schools overseas, but their parents insist that they complete their O levels before they accept the offers. Madam Fang said she was dumbfounded.

or 18 years now, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has been spearheading the National Arts Month (NAM) in the month of February with a series of festivities and activities mounted throughout the country, meant to celebrate Filipino artistry and to promote the arts and the artists. For 2009, the celebration continues with intensified promotion. For a country that has scant interest in art and culture, NAM has remained largely overlooked despite efforts to popularize it. It is an unfortunate thing as past celebrations have yielded notable and interesting productions. As early as now, efforts in publicizing the event are underway. There are plans to penetrate television shows, malls and different schools to promote NAM. Celebrity endorsers are being tapped.

I find myself obliged by conscience to break the silence and to take a public stand against the media’s violent war on local arts, culture and heritage. The considerations, which have led me to this painful decision, are a casual look at the content of both the print and broadcasting media. Indeed, what the media mirrors is NOT who we are. Instead, its reflections reveal an unacceptable level of self hate and lack of clarity on what it means to put “South Africa arts first.” What makes matters worse is that the media’s war on local arts and culture has intensified.
