The economy has apparently been heading south for about a year now, but the iPhone's sales numbers haven't taken a nosedive just yet. The global smartphone market has also been growing, and Needham & Co. analyst Charles Wolf offers an explanation for this in a recent report covered by AppleInsider. Wolf notes that Apple's global smartphone market share rose to a record high during the prior quarter, but he thinks that the iPhone has been propping up market growth overall. He expects that the December quarter is likely to see a drop in the smartphone market growth rate that will include a drop the growth rate of iPhone sales.

This IDC study, which is a translation of the Japan report IDC #J8330107, presents an analysis of the secure content management (SCM) products and threat management (TM) product markets and forecasts the market trends. With the emergence of new types of threats such as phishing, spam mails and spyware, endpoint security solutions that are mainly antivirus product equipped with message security and Web filtering, and firewall will probably drive market growth. This situation is also reflected in the Web filtering products and message security product market. The TM product market will continue to shift to security appliance and outsourcing service, and therefore the software segment will shrink.

HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - Share prices were lower at mid-morning as large-caps HSBC and China Mobile remained under pressure, causing the market to give up modest early gains driven by hopes of further monetary easing in China. HSBC was down about 2 pct, extending last week's slide, following a sharp drop in its ADR price on Friday amid growing concerns the bank may soon need to cut its dividend and raise fresh funds to cope with losses in its US operations. Rating agency Standard & Poor's cut its outlook on HSBC to 'negative' from 'stable', saying the lender's asset quality is likely to deteriorate. China Mobile was down after reporting lower net subscriber additions for November compared to the previous month. Mainland banks turned lower after early gains.

UBS Investment Researchs business jet survey released late last month shows a contracting market index that is reflective of a market that continues to rapidly deteriorate. According to UBS analyst David Strauss, We believe this [is] a market with few serious buyers, too much supply and pricing that has fallen 25 percent or more over the past six to eight weeks. A lack of financing is also endangering aircraft manufacturers backlogs, UBS said. While our survey has indicated slowing end-market demand for some time, financing looked to be there to deliver the backlog. However, over the past two monthsbusiness jet financing looks to have dried up considerably. Meanwhile, an increase in inventory of pre-owned aircraft and decline in flight activity presage what we think will be a significant slowing in new aircraft demand.
