The Web is a Trillion Pages Long: Google

The web is a trillion pages to Google, and growing at a rate of several billion pages per day, the company said in a blog post. Literally though, the interweb consists of more than the trillion pages that Google indexes. Google claims not to index every one of those trillion pages; not all of them, "We don't index every one of those trillion pages -- many of them are similar to each other, or represent auto-generated content..." Most of the pages consist of duplicate URLs -- with multiple pages containing the same content.

Gartner Says 90 Percent of E-Commerce Sites Will Use At Least One SaaS-Based Service by 2013

Although uptake of software-as-a-service (SaaS) e-commerce solutions is slow, more organizations will begin to utilize these services during the next few years, according to Gartner, Inc. By 2013, 40 percent of e-commerce deployments will use a complete SaaS e-commerce solution and 90 percent of e-commerce sites will subscribe to at least one SaaS-based service, such as product reviews, product recommendations or social sales capabilities.

Gap between domestic and cross-border e-commerce grows wider, says EU report

EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva today announced the results of a new EU wide survey on e-commerce and cross border trade. The figures show that even though e-commerce is taking off at national level, cross-border e-commerce is failing to keep pace. From 2006 to 2008, the share of all EU consumers that have bought at least one item over the internet has increased significantly (from 27% to 33%) whilst cross border e-commerce is stable (6% to 7%). The pattern is similar for those with internet access at home - 56% of consumers with internet at home have made a purchase (in any country including their own) by e-commerce compared to 50% in 2006, while only 13% (of those with internet access at home) made a cross-border e-commerce purchase compared to 12% in 2006.

Clear strategy key for SaaS e-commerce success

Companies seeking hosted e-commerce services will find many different providers and products. So, to make good purchasing decisions, business and IT managers must first establish clear goals for their online stores, Gartner said Wednesday. Once companies have identified the requirements for carrying out their e-commerce strategies, they can then properly evaluate the different SaaS (software-as-a-service) vendors and offerings on the market. Gartner is issuing this advice in the recently published study "SaaS Impact on E-Commerce" after finding that, by 2013, 90 percent of e-commerce sites will subscribe to at least one such service. At a very basic level, a company must make sure that the SaaS provider it selects offers the e-commerce capabilities the business needs, at the proper scale and level of sophistication.

Selling Online with Drupal e-Commerce

Michael J. Ross writes "Many Web developers wish to create e-commerce sites that also support collaborative editing of content, community forums, and other features that can increase traffic to the sites. But most shopping cart products do not include those capabilities, or, if such third-party add-ons exist, they may be quite limited in functionality. Similarly, most if not all content management systems (CMSs) lack native e-commerce capabilities. Yet that barrier is being overcome, because a handful of e-commerce modules have been created for the most popular CMSs. Perhaps the most promising pairing, at this time, is Drupal and the e-Commerce module — a combination covered in the book Selling Online with Drupal e-Commerce by Michael Peacock.

Hiding pages is not security

It can be somewhat difficult to find effective ways to protect pages and images on websites. Many beginning designers like to hide their pages and think that if they don't link to the pages, they won't be found by search engines or competitors. But search engine spiders are very good at finding things on Web pages unless you either block the spiders from indexing it with a robots.txt file or you prevent access to it with an htaccess file or other password protection scheme.

Second Domain/host For Cart Pages?

Is it better to have your ecommerce cart pages on your own domain versus a separate domain & host? I have a website which currently has a shopping cart, but we'd like to upgrade it. I've been researching some ecommerce solutions, and for some of them, we'd have to have a new domain hosted on their server - where we'd link our product pages externally to the cart pages on this other site/host. Is there any disadvantage to doing this? Is it better in the long run to have my entire site hosted on one server?
