Lost In Translation Google Faces Significant Challenges To Build Babel Phone: related news

Lost In Translation : Google Faces Significant Challenges To Build Babel Phone

The news that Google was working on a phone that could one day become the equivalent of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's Babelfish, opened some tantalising possibilities.

Google unveils sharing tool Google Buzz

Google launched Google Buzz, a new product that integrates with users' Gmail inboxes and lets them share web links, photos, videos, and more, and chat with people from their Gmail contacts list. Google is rolling out Buzz to all Gmail accounts over the next few days. It also plans to make Google Buzz available to businesses and schools using Google Apps, with added features for sharing within organisations. The Google Buzz version for mobiles brings a new feature to sharing information via internet-enabled PCs, namely geo-tagging. This enables users to select a place on Google Maps and attach it as location tag to posts, or read what others have posted about a specific place. The Buzz version for mobiles can be accessed at Buzz.google.com, using the Buzz layer on Google Maps for mobile, clicking the Buzz shortcut from Google.

Google's Computing Power Refines Translation

gollum123 sends an excerpt from the NY Times on how Google has taken a lead in language translation, in one of the company's few unqualified successes as it attempts to broaden is offerings beyond search. "...Google's quick rise to the top echelons of the translation business is a reminder of what can happen when Google unleashes its brute-force computing power on complex problems. The network of data centers that it built for Web searches may now be, when lashed together, the world's largest computer. Google is using that machine to push the limits on translation technology. Last month, for example, it said it was working to combine its translation tool with image analysis, allowing a person to, say, take a cellphone photo of a menu in German and get an instant English translation.

What would Google do?

flood increasing exponentially, it makes good sense to reverse-engineer the company making the most money from this information overload. Google is riding the data wave with its automated search technology, and has spawned a host of products and services that include Google Images, Google Books, Google News, Google Videos, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Groups, Google Reader, orkut, Blogger, Google Sites, and YouTube.

Google faces competition probe in EU

The European Commission has launched an investigation into competition concerns at Google following complaints from three companies. The complaints from UK price comparison site Foundem, a French legal search engine called ejustice.fr and Microsoft's Ciao! from Bing centre on their rankings in Google's search engine. According to Google, which confirmed the notification from the EC, the Foundem complaint argues that Google's algorithms demote the site in search results because it's a vertical search engine and so a direct competitor to Google. Ejustice.fr's complaint seems to echo these concerns, Google said. On the third complaint, Google said that after Microsoft acquired Ciao! in 2008 (renaming it Ciao! from Bing) Google started receiving complaints about its standard terms and conditions.

Google instant voice translation: The end of Franglais?

Google is developing software to translate languages as you speak on your phone, like a Google Voice/Google Translate mashup. Rather than working word-by-word, the tool will 'listen' to phrases and sentences before attempting translation, so it will know the full context and deliver a more accurate translation.

Yes, Google Will Even Delete Its Own Employees' Sites From Google Index If They Screw Up

Over the years, we've seen plenty of people get mad and sue Google over getting either dropped from Google's index, or simply ranked really low on certain searches. And, of course, for some there are always totally unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about Google purposely "punishing" a company or individual it doesn't like. To date, however, there's been no evidence at all that Google acts in such a capricious manner when it comes to rankings. If the company did so, and it ever came out, the hit to Google's reputation would be something fierce. It's even more ridiculous when you consider that all of the accusations of such personal attacks seem to come from tiny companies -- hardly any kind of threat to Google, anyway.

5 How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Google Buzz

If this column were a Microsoft TV commercial, I'd say that Google Buzz was my idea. Way back in April, I wrote a column in this space called Inside Google's 'Facebook Killer'. In that column, I proposed that Google should acquire Twitter, and build it into Google Profiles. If they did so, I wrote, Google would have "a social network that does everything Facebook does, minus all the things everybody hates about Facebook." Well, they didn't acquire Twitter. But they did build Twitter-like messaging into Profiles. And, yes, the result is a social network better than Facebook.
