The importance of a new archeological site in St George, Utah, U.S. was recently highlighted by Andrew Milner, Paleontologist, City of St. George, Jim Kirkland, State Paleontologist and Sidney Ash, Paleo-botanists. The site is significant because it is the only early Jurassic land flora known in the western United States. It provides evidence that a variety of land plants were present in the area about 200 million years ago.

A year ago this month, the New York Times published one of the most notorious pieces of neuromarketing propaganda ever to show up in a major daily. Two Novembers ago, the Times science pages hawked a witless brain-imaging study of speaking in tongues. (In that case, converging evidence from scientists and journalists revealed a useful fact: If you think you're babbling incoherently, then you probably are.)

wo weeks ago, at the New Acropolis Museum in Athens, due to open early next year, the Presidents of Italy and Greece took part in an historic ceremony (right) that could have major repercussions for Britain. The Italians were handing back to the Greeks a fragment of marble sculpture taken from the Parthenon 200 years ago. The fragment portrays, in exquisite detail, the draped lower leg and foot of a seated goddess, probably Artemis.

IconA few weeks ago we published an article titled "The Great Mac OS X 10.4 Wish List", detailing a few personal wishes for the next version of OSX. Later I learned that quite a few Apple engineers read the article and so it felt good that the time spent writing the article was not just a voice in the void. A reader emailed me a few days ago asking me to do the same for other OSes and DEs. So here is my personal wish-list for a future version of Gnome. Please tell us about your own Gnome wish list in the comment section provided.

DEAR ABBY: My sister, "Shannon," and I had a major falling out years ago and I haven't spoken to her or her family since -- except briefly, when we had to make arrangements for our father's funeral three years ago. Shannon is 17 years older than me, married with two grown children. I'm perfectly OK with this arrangement. In fact, I prefer it, and I'm sure they do, too.

David Gerard noted an interesting story going down with a relatively minor project that has interesting implications for any Open Source project. He writes "Ten years ago, Peter Thoeny started the TWiki wiki engine. It attracted many contributors at twiki.org. About a year ago, Thoeny founded the startup twiki.net. On 27th October, twiki.net locked all the other contributors out of twiki.org in an event Thoeny called 'the twiki.org relaunch.' Here's the IRC meeting log. All the other core developers have now moved to a new project, NextWiki. Is it a sensible move for a venture capital firm that depends on a healthy Open Source community to lock it out?"

Kevin Rose, founder of Digg and Revision3, demos Qik live streaming video app for the iPhone on his blog (video embedded above). These new streaming services, including uStream, are very cool. Not long ago you needed a ton of equipment and a satellite-upload truck to achieve what you can basically do now with a cell phone and a Qik account. For free! But to put this in perspective, the promise of streaming video from mobile phones is nothing new. I remember video-calling being the much-hyped new "killer-app" for 3G-phones back in Europe many years ago. It flopped. The difference now is that the market is ready for these services and it’s about one-to-many and not one-to-one. The devices are also better, video-sharing websites widely used and the combination of video streaming and running a text-chat seem to be a winning combo.

Now granted that's a reduction in profit of 74% compared to year-ago levels of $235.7 million, but not nearly as bad as the markets expected given NVIDIA's current predicament. Q3 revenue fell to $897.7 million, this is a reduction of 20% compared to year-ago levels of $1.12 billion.

An ongoing fall in retail gasoline prices is not leading to an immediate bounce in US demand, according to figures released Tuesday in the MasterCard Advisors survey for the week ending October 24. On a four-week moving average, gasoline demand slipped 8% from the year-ago figure, with an average 61.724 million barrels consumed during the week. The demand decline was milder during the week-to-week period, with 62.279 million gallons consumed, and demand slipping to a negative 6.4% rate from the year-ago period -- the same percentage fall as in the previous week ending October 17, 2008. An average 8.897 million b/d of gasoline were used during the week ending October 24, the report said. National average prices in the most recent survey week dropped to $2.
