imageAT&T isn’t the only carrier shining in the afterglow of the iPhone. Canada’s Rogers reported an 84 percent jump in profits, thanks largely to strong iPhone sales and subscriber growth. The company sold about 255,000 iPhone 3Gs during the last quarter and about half of them were sold to new subscribers. Although the carrier is selling the device at a comparable price point, Rogers’ earnings aren’t being affected by iPhone subsidies as much as they are at AT&T (NYSE: T). That’s not to say it isn’t impacting the bottom line: “The high upfront costs associated with adding iPhone subscribers so rapidly is an investment made to obtain customers with significantly higher than average revenue per user” for years to come, the company said.

XML provides flexible, extensible data models and type systems for structured data, and has found wide-acceptance in many domains. XML processing can be slow, however, especially for scientific data, thus leading to the conventional wisdom that XML is not appropriate for such data. Instead, data is stored in specialized binary formats, and is transmitted via work-arounds such as attachments and base64 encoding. This paper presents a binary XML format and implementation for scientific data called Binary XML for Scientific Applications (BXSA). They show that performance is comparable to that of commonly used scientific data formats such as netCDF.

"No matter what Linux distribution or Open Source-based OS you use, be it Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, Debian, OpenSolaris, RHEL/CentOS, The BSDs, Mac OS X, or any myriad of others, absolutely none of this would be possible without the determined and often thankless work of thousands upon thousands of programmers. Recently, a study undertaken by the Linux Foundation determined that Fedora was valued at about 10 billion dollars in terms of real world development cost if the labor hours were translated into actual greenbacks spent for a comparable closed source product. I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate -- it could very well be much higher than that, since this estimate is not including all the years and years of work that went into the entire stack prior to Red Hat's involvement, and is a strictly by the numbers estimation based on lin

Setting a new direction for Australia's space science and industry sector,' it calls for the formation of a 'Space Industry Advisory Council' to oversee the creation of a fully-fledged Australian Space Agency. Of the top 20 GDP nations, Australia is the only one without a Space Agency, which impacts on many aspects of ordinary life, not to mention Research and Engineering endeavors. Every satellite operated by Australia is owned by another party and the costs of this alone are comparable to that of a Space Agency. A report on smartphone satisfaction ranked Apple’s iPhone as having the highest customer satisfaction. Released today by J.D. Power and Associates, the report measured five factors when it came to customer satisfaction, ranging from ease-of-use to battery life. On a 1,000-point scale, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) received 778 points; Blackberry receive 703 points and Samsung received 701 points. Although satisfaction ranked high, the study still said one-fourth of users report having to reboot the device when it freezes and issues related to touch screen problems. Rather than thinking this is a runaway victory for Apple, it’s worth pointing out that they are all grouped together at a fairly comparable level that leaves plenty of room for improvement.
