From a Famous Painting, a Jolting Spectacle of Flesh

The gam parade at Radio City Music Hall is rolling once again, but this season the Rockettes have some pretty fierce competition in making lively use of the appendages most of us bipeds employ for more mundane purposes. The undulating forest of limbs in Martha Clarke’s celebrated “Garden of Earthly Delights” may not have the pop appeal of those high kickers uptown, but this singular work of dance theater is without doubt one of the most eerily hypnotic spectacles of flesh in motion ever put on a New York stage.

Alchemy - A Show of New Paintings by Becky Soria

Gallery 3 in Houston presents "Alchemy A Show of New Paintings by Becky Soria: during November 2008. Becky Soria has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2002. Bruce Leutwyler states, "Alchemy - the quest to turn base metal into gold. No, like a painting, it is the quest to turn base material, base flesh into spirit. But what is spirit, what is flesh really? In a departure from, yet a movement forward in her investigation of the female form, Becky's new paintings may remind one who contemplates them of the unfinished sculptures in the Accademia Di Belle Arti in Florence. The human figures in them are not so much abstracted forms, as forms coming into existence or dissolving out of existence into the primal elements that constitute them.

Did anyone think that Stanford was going to throw $20 million at a cricket match without wanting his pound of flesh?

Sean Morris, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), added further pressure on David Collier and Giles Clarke, respectively the chief executive and chairman of the ECB, and the main architects of the deal with Allen Stanford, when he revealed yesterday that about half the England squad had requested a meeting with him on Wednesday evening to express concerns over the fallout from the Stanford Super Series.

Zune-based Windows Mobile coming soon?

I'll be honest here and say that I've never seen one of these in the flesh. It's an MP3 player from Microsoft called "Zune" and there's many who will obviously compare it to the iPod. Anyhoo, there's rumours flying around the net that this could merge into a new Windows Mobile phone. The cross-over device is codenamed "Pink" and Jim Goldman from CNBC.com is reporting on a possible launch in just a few months.

Erickson: Star Wars MMO Akin To Multiple Full-Length BioWare RPGs [10.23.08] EA BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic is trying to solve the problem of story in MMOs by employing twelve full-time writers to flesh out the universe -- lead writer Daniel Erickson tells Gamasutra why, explaining: "[EA has] come to me and said, 'Your budget is what?!' but nobody has ever said, 'Why are we doing this?'"

DVD of the week: Teeth

Back in the Eighties, in the aftermath of the 'video nasties' scare, British censors would have taken a pair of gardening shears to this delightfully outr slice of rubbery horror fun. The subject matter alone (the 'vagina dentata' myth made flesh) would have given chief censor James Ferman palpitations. How times have changed! Today the British Board of Film Classification merely notes that Teeth contains scenes of 'very strong sexualised gore' including 'bleeding genitals' while recognising (correctly) that such elements may be 'shocking' but are also presented within the context of a 'darkly comic tone'.

Nanobama: Barack Obama in Nanotubes

A technique known as nanolithography was used to build these Obama faces, combining 150 million carbon nanotubes to construct each individual half-millimeter visage. Depending on your political leanings, the result is either the cutest wittle powitician ever or proof that science, in the wrong hands, will engineer miniature robotic Democrats who distract with a message of hope while eating our flesh. As for the undecideds...I'll be honest here. I'm so sick of hearing what those dudes "think." [Flickr via Wired]
