OSS often has little or no initial licensing fees, while the initial licensing fees are often substantial for proprietary software. This means that you can often "try out" OSS as long as you like, and then pay for support later once the software becomes more important to your business.

Initial US PGP and CGP contract nominations for November were reportedly down 20-30 cents/lb, sources said Friday. One major producer reported one seller nominating down 20 cents/lb and one buyer nominating down 30 cents/lb. The judge overseeing the AAP and Authors Guild settlement with Google has given preliminary approval to the deal. Federal judge John Sprizzo gave his initial approval to the settlement on Friday. Approval was expected and will set in motion a string of events designed to lead to final approval of the settlement that is now set for June. In the next stage, attorneys will be preparing to send notice of the settlement to all publishers and authors informing them of the terms of the deal. The $125 million agreement that ended the copyright litigation between the authors, publishers and Google was announced October 28.
