British telecom Vodafone to buy 4.8% in Polish mobile firm Polkomtel forEUR 176 mln

WARSAW. OCTOBER 29. INTERFAX CENTRAL EUROPE - British telephone operator Vodafone will buy 4.8% of shares in Polish mobile operator Polkomtel for EUR 176 mln, the company said in a statement Wednesday. Vodafone will buy the shares from Denmark's TDC. The transaction is set to close in the fourth quarter of this year, boosting Vodafone's shareholding in Polkomtel from the current 19.6% to 24.4%. In 2006, Polish state-controlled shareholders of Polkomtel agreed to buy the shares to which they hold the preemptive right, a stake of 14.8%, for EUR 650.5 mln. TDC said the closing of the sale to Vodafone and to Polkomtel's Polish shareholders will take place after the court lifts the injunction obtained by Vodafone earlier. TDC, which currently has 19.

Marfin Popular Bank 9M profit at EUR 323.3 mln, flat y/y

The consolidated net profit attributable to shareholders of the Marfin Popular Bank Group reached EUR 323.3 mln flat compared to the first nine months of 2007. The enhanced profitability of the Group in the first nine months of 2008 has resulted in a return on assets ratio (RoA) of 1.28% and a return on tangible equity (RoTE) of 19.8%.

The construction of a recycling plant for solid household waste and biomass will begin in Shumen, North-eastern Bulgaria, in September, said Stefan Terziev, a representative of the project's U.S. investor ICS International Consulting SP, 'Dnevnik a.m.' reports. The 14-month recycling plant project will kick start the development of Shumen's high-tech park. ICS International Consulting SP plans to invest 49 mln euro in the production of bio diesel based on low-temperature waste recycling. The Shumen municipality will provide the 20 ha site for the construction of the plant. The local administration has also vowed to assist the investor in obtaining the relevant construction permits. The facility will have an annual recycling capacity of 2 mln tons of waste.

Prague bourse PX index up 9.17% Thursday, led by Erste Bank, utility CEZ

PRAGUE. OCTOBER 30. INTERFAX CENTRAL EUROPE - The Prague Stock Exchange (BCPP) blue-chip PX index gained 9.17% Thursday to close at 864.5 points with all titles except one ending in positive territory, led Austrian lender Erste Bank on solid third-quarter results and heavyweight Czech state-controlled utility CEZ. "After recording the biggest daily gains in its history [up 13.16% Wednesday] the Prague bourse continued to erase losses from previous weeks," Komercni banka analyst Miroslav Adamkovic said. "The news of the day was Erste Bank's Q3 results, which exceeded market expectations and last year's in net gains, thanks to sales of its insurance activities, but on the operational level was not glorious." Erste Bank's 9M08 net profit of EUR 1,463 mln met the average market expectation (EUR 1,466 mln, brokerage Atlantik FT said.

Mizuho posts $402 mln Q2 loss, to raise capital
