Chinese Hacking of American Military Networks On the Rise

Anti-Globalism writes with this excerpt from the Guardian: "China is stealing sensitive information from American computer networks and stepping up its online espionage, according to a US congressional panel. Beijing's investment in rocket technology is also accelerating the militarization of outer space and lifting it into the 'commanding heights' of modern warfare, the advisory group claims. ... A summary of the study, released in advance, alleges that networks and databases used by the US government and American defense contractors are regularly targeted by Chinese hackers. 'China is stealing vast amounts of sensitive information from US computer networks,' says Larry Wortzel, chairman of the commission set up by Congress in 2000 to investigate US-China issues.

GNUveau Networks builds solar-powered Linux computer networks for remote villages (video)

Scott Johnson of GNUveau Networks has developed a solar-powered Internet "hub" system (running Ubuntu GNU/Linux) that he builds to order in his Daytona Beach, Florida, home. There are real SolarNetOne installations running in Africa right now, providing wireless connectivity and "Internet Cafe" access to hundreds of people. The system uses off-the-shelf hardware that Scott modifies to run on 12V -- and to use a lot less power than the stock versions. As Scott says, in solar-powered computer installations, "The Watt is king."

Four out of Seven Small US Networks Lost Customers in Q3

The Verizon-Alltel merger, which was recently approved by the FCC, will leave an even greater gap between the large and small US mobile operators; there will be no networks of between 7m and 30m customers. There are currently seven networks with fewer than 7m but more than 0.25m customers, although if AT&T’s plan to buy Centennial is successful, there will only be six remaining. At the end of Q3 08, these seven had 17.33m customers in total. Aggregated annual growth stood at 13.1%, compared to 15.9% for T-Mobile ,14.0% for AT&T, 11.2% for Verizon and -6.3% for Sprint.

Google Searches for Ad Dollars in Social Networks

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently published a series of intriguing patent applications from Google. They raise questions about the search giant’s significance for the profitability of social networks—and whether anyone has figured out how best to translate Web 2.0 hype into bankable income. Dozens of social-networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, and Friendster continue to flourish like Web start‑ups in the dot-com heyday—consuming engineering talent, computing resources, and thousands of lines of code along the way. But no one has yet found the golden keys to profitability. The three Google patents, which rely on language processing and other technology to search for patterns in data, could ratchet up social networks’ ad revenue by better targeting ads to individuals, experts say.
