Clearly its time to use Linux or Mac and avoid the malware problems of Windows. MS cares not to fix the malware problems, but would rather sell you OneCare, to protect against the problems, that they, Microsoft create in the first place.

alphadogg writes "Northwestern University researchers have developed a system that gives a heads up about traffic problems on the Internet, where there is no central management system. Their Network Early Warning System (NEWS), which latches on to a popular BitTorrent client, is designed to spot problems by encouraging feedback from end users who are experiencing problems. 'You can think of it as crowd sourcing network monitoring,' said associate professor Fabián Bustamante. He has a track record with BitTorrent users, having developed the popular Ono plug-in for speeding up P2P interactions."

Techdirt makes note of some problems cropping up already for early voters in the presidential election. CNN covers some of the issues, including machines in a West Virginia county which recorded some votes incorrectly because of an alignment error. A lengthy discussion of the problems was also on NPR. Reader Rooked_One points out a related story at NPR about a voting program called PVOTE, written in Python and only 500 lines long. "Pvote is not a complete voting system. It is just the software program that interacts with the voter. Other necessary functions, such as voter registration, ballot preparation, and canvassing, are not part of Pvote. It is especially important that the voter interaction be correct because it is the only part of an election that must take place in private, whereas all other parts of an election can and should be

Over a year ago I wrote a letter to Palm on behalf of the Treocentral community (see thread here) concerning issues with the Treo 700p. Palm responded by eventually providing a Manufacturer Release ROM Update (700p MR) intended to either resolve, or at least alleviate those problems. There has never been a consensus within the community as to whether this was sufficiently accomplished. Of those who were still dissatisfied, some resolved their problems by abandoning Palm products while others migrated to the Centro claiming that it did not have the 700p's inherent flaws. I decided to find out for myself and get a Centro.

Geek Satire writes "Voting works only if you believe your vote gets counted accurately. The 2008 US elections have avoided many well-known problems of the 2004 and 2000 elections, but many problems remain. O'Reilly News interviewed Dr. Barbara Simons, advisor to the Federal Election Assistance Commission, to review electronic voting in the 2008 US elections, discussing the physical security of storing and maintaining election machines, the move from electronic back to paper ballots, and why open source voting machines don't necessarily solve problems of bugs, backdoors, and audits."

Earlier this afternoon, NASA held a press conference to update the public on what's happening with what might be its most famous bit of hardware: the Hubble Space Telescope. Last week, the news from orbit wasn't that great: activation of a backup data formatting unit went well, but the telescope shut itself down when the science instruments were brought back on line. This week, the news was much better: they've identified the problems, and none of them are serious.
