Mike writes "A draft US Army intelligence report has identified the popular micro-blogging service Twitter as a potential terrorist tool. A chapter titled 'Potential for Terrorist Use of Twitter' notes that Twitter members reported the July Los Angeles earthquake faster than news outlets and activists at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis used it to provide information on police movements. 'Twitter is already used by some members to post and/or support extremist ideologies and perspectives,' the report said. The report goes on to say, 'Terrorists could theoretically use Twitter social networking in the US as an operation tool.' Just wait until the Army finds out about chat rooms and email!"

London British police are investigating how a digital camera reportedly containing MI6 images of terrorist suspects ended up on the Internet auction site eBay. The camera, which fetched £17 ($32), included pictures of rocket launchers and missiles, the Sun newspaper reported. A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed police were investigating, but declined to say whether intelligence agents were involved or to comment on reports the camera was sold by an MI6 agent. A friend of the buyer said he bought the camera because he was going on holiday. When he downloaded his snaps, he "saw some of rocket launchers and missiles. He knew he hadn't taken them so he asked his friends about it and they suggested going to the police."

Presto Vivace and others sent us this CNet report on a just-released NRC report coming to the conclusion, which will surprise no one here, that data mining doesn't work very well. It's all those darn false positives. The submitter adds, "Any chance we could go back to probable cause?" "A report scheduled to be released on Tuesday by the National Research Council, which has been years in the making, concludes that automated identification of terrorists through data mining or any other mechanism 'is neither feasible as an objective nor desirable as a goal of technology development efforts.' Inevitable false positives will result in 'ordinary, law-abiding citizens and businesses' being incorrectly flagged as suspects.
