Hello, so welcome to my Blog. And this is my first sojourn into the world of Blogs so forgive me if it all goes horribly wrong . I never was one for a diary or journal before, although there was a memorable period when I was 9 when a frantic burst of enthusiasm resulted in 2 weeks’ worth of postings in a diary. Fascinating reading it was: Monday, got up, went to school, came home, watched TV, went to bed. Tuesday, got up, went to school, came home, watched TV, went to bed, Wednesday got up, went to school, came home, created plan for global domination, watched TV, went to bed. I’d like to set expectations low, this is going to be an occasional thing. Less is more, hopefully.

I had two new experiences today. I watched a day of Test match cricket as a spectator at an Indian ground in comforts that, in the context of what an Indian cricket fan has learnt to endure, bordered on the luxurious. And then I also watched Sachin Tendulkar score a Test hundred in front of a crowd so small that, with a bit of perseverance, you could have counted them manually.

dslrs and hd videoIt was a fairly innocuous start. A hastily assembled, last-minute project conceived and shot in 14 straight hours, edited together in three hours (no time for color correction) and a quick posting to a blog with the link to the completed five-minute short. This was as close as you could get to a straight line from the camera to the web. No hype machine, no PR company creating fake YouTube entries to generate buzz—just a simple blog entry and a video clip. And then it happened. A few people read the blog, watched the video and forwarded it to friends, who watched and forwarded. Within eight hours it had garnered more than 250,000 views, only through word of mouth. I received more than a dozen e-mails that day saying, “You gotta watch this!” The video now has received upward of two million views and growing.

If you watched the "Five Years on Mars" documentary on the National Geographic channel about the Mars Exploration Rovers, you probably saw how both rovers have gotten stuck in some of the small sand dunes on Mars surface. These dune fields on Mars are a bit of a mystery to planetary geologists, and in fact, there is nothing like them on Earth. The fields of rippled sand on Mars, called Transverse Aeolian Ridges (TARs), are found over large areas across Mars. The dunes themselves are smaller than the gigantic dunes also found on Mars, but the fields are bigger than any sand ripple fields found on Earth. TARs hold clues to past and present climate processes, and since they can be death traps for rovers, scientists want to know more about these unusual features.

Yes, I watched the final Barack Obama/John McCain debate on Wednesday night. Thankfully, the election will be over soon, and my dad will stop forwarding me “interesting” e-mails (he’s a conservative ex-cop; just one guess who he supports). U.S. presidential politics have made some headway into the pharmaceutical blogosphere; John Mack reported the results of his poll at the Pharma Marketing Blog; apparently pharma favors Mr. Obama. But there are other things to talk about other than politics and the shaky economy. For example, the NIH suspended a large grant at Emory University after Sen. Charles Grassley questioned the payments received by the former chair of the school’s psychiatry department; the Wall Street Journal reports that eight companies will be studying blood clot occurrence in stent patients; Genentech and Johnson & Jo

I just watched Susan Ormiston's piece on The National on Steve Janke's impressive bit of sleuthing regarding Garth Turner's appearance on CPAC. It seems Turner's spontaneous door-knocking encounter with a man he'd never met before was nothing of the sort. Janke reckons the man is the son of Turner's assistant.

I've not watched a ball of the first Test between Australia and India so far. Actually, that's a lie, Sky in my hotel room here in Spain have shown one ball, the one in which Tendulkar prodded forward at Mitchell Johnson and was caught at point for 13. Guess Lara's record is safe for another day, then.
